Is perfectionism healthy or not (and when)? Should we avoid mistakes or embrace them? How can our musical pursuits retain their natural joyousness and physical comfort while we pursue high goals? In this lively and candid presentation, pianist and author William Westney will challenge much of the "conventional wisdom" about music lessons, relating musical processes to other fields of endeavor and recent neurological findings. Attendees are invited to bring in specific technical "trouble spots" from their repertoire for demonstration work during this insightful lecture. This event is free and open to the public.

Biography: William Westney, top piano winner of the Geneva International Competition and a competitor in the 1969 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, has had a uniquely refreshing and invigorating impact on the world of music pedagogy. Not only is he in great demand as a keynote speaker and conference presenter, but his acclaimed and trailblazing book The Perfect Wrong Note: Learning to Trust Your Musical Self (Amadeus Press) has sold over 15,000 copies worldwide and is a required text in many college pedagogy courses. Winner of many teaching awards, Westney is also the originator of the "The Un-Master Class" workshop (profiled in a featured New York Times article), which has been given hundreds of times over the last 25 years at major conservatories, universities, and conventions around the world from Beijing to London, Seoul, Helsinki, Vienna, New York, and many more.
