Concerto Commentary

By Mike Winter

Saturday’s and today’s concerto performances are worth describing because they showed some intersting traits.  Bozhanov the spontaneous found himself running around the orchestra likea dog chasing its tail…no fun, except for him perhaps.  Vocatello, definitely back at full strength, has a world-class technique and at times she lets it run wild.  The end of the first movement of the Prokoffiev Third is marked “a little faster” so when she took off, the orchestra left in the dust.  She cleverly covered by adding another chord when the orchestra finally caught up with her at the end.

Zhang’s Prokoffiev second was perfectly played…cool perfection compared to the passion and fire of Yeol Eum Son.  Particularly notice in the first movement cadenza, the same could be heard everywhere, especially in the last movement cadenza.  Brief though it be, Son made a powerful climax from it, whereas Zhang was precise but flat.

Zhang was NOT “flat” (to me). His playing is honest and sincere …if you need vicarious thrills, go to the circus.

sometimes, honest + sincere = flat, as in Prokofiev 2
Why do you think passion + fire = circus ????
