Competition Children’s Education Programs

Every four years the Cliburn hosts the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, considered by many to be the most prestigious classical piano contest in the world. In May 2013, thirty young pianists from around the world will be welcomed with Texas-sized hospitality to compete as the music world watches. The Fort Worth community comes together to support this Competition, and through special education programs, young students also have the opportunity to participate and experience the Competition. These programs provide music and art education to students and bring the excitement of the Cliburn Competition into the classroom.

Student Banners

The spirit of the competition is felt all around North Texas as vibrant banners line Main St. 2,300 Fort Worth elementary, middle, and high school students who promote the Cliburn Competition through their own creative expressions paint the banners. The Cliburn provides canvas banners and art supplies to students who design and paint the banners. Forty-four banners will be selected by a volunteer committee to fly downtown for several weeks during the Competition. The remaining banners will be hung or displayed at various venues across Fort Worth. The students take great pride seeing their artistic creations as they brighten the downtown streets.

Adopt-A-Competitor

Elementary students are also given the opportunity to experience the Competition, right in their own school, thru the Adopt-A-Competitor program. Participating Cliburn competitors are assigned to a school where they are "adopted" by fourth and fifth grade students. The Competitors present concerts and visit with students in the days just before the start of the Competition. Teachers prepare their students with information and materials provided by the Cliburn about their competitor and the Competition prior to the visit. Competitors are welcomed at each school with encouraging signs, banners, and posters created by the school. Students experience the thrill of great classical music and the magic of meeting a piano virtuoso. After performing for the students, the competitors visit with the children in their classrooms where the students have the opportunity to ask questions and get to know the competitor better. Because so many of the competitors come from countries outside the United States, children learn about new cultures, customs, and geography. The visit creates a special bond between the students and their adopted competitor. The students then track the progress of their competitor as they advance throughout the following three weeks of the Competition. Since the inception of the project in 1997, children have had the thrill of following someone who has made it into the Final Round, as three gold medalists and four finalists have participated in the Adopt-A-Competitor project in the previous four Competitions.

Cliburn Notes

Even if students do not have a competitor visit their school, every fourth and fifth grade student in the Fort Worth School District receives Cliburn Notes. Cliburn Notes is a 20-page activity booklet developed by the Cliburn in collaboration with Fort Worth School District curriculum specialist to teach children about the Competition and its competitors. It includes word searches, crossword puzzles, and 'baseball cards' of all the competitors. Besides the 15,000 copies distributed to the school district, another 1,000 copies are distributed to local community centers.
