Fort Worth, Texas, May 27, 2010:

The Van Cliburn Foundation will host its sixth International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs May 23-29, 2011. Applications are now being accepted online and by mail for all interested competitors. Full details on the application process can be found at Cliburn.org.

Inaugurated in 1999, the International Competition for Outstanding Amateurs was created to celebrate and recognize the importance of music-making, both on and off the stage. It includes three recital rounds over a one-week period, played on a Steinway concert grand piano, with the program choices left up to the competitors.

To ensure that those participating in the competition are doing it, in Van Cliburn's words, "to celebrate the Amateur spirit," competitors must be at least 35 years of age by the start of competition, and cannot derive their principal source of income from playing or teaching piano.

All 75 competitors begin by performing a 12-minute program in the Preliminary round. Then, 25 performers will be selected to play a 20-minute program in the semi-final round. Just six of the original competitors will be chosen to present a recital of 30 minutes in the final round, from which the first, second and third prize winners will be chosen to receive a cash award.

Awards include: First Prize, $2,000; Second Prize, $1,500; Third Prize, $1,000; Press Jury Award; Audience Award; Most Creative Programming Award as well as special awards in each category of repertoire.

The jury for the Amateur Competition will be chaired by John Giordano, Chairman of the Jury for the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and Music Director Emeritus of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. Other members will include distinguished music faculty from local universities and other notable industry professionals. A Press Jury Award will also be given by the Press Jury.

All performances will take place at Ed Landreth Auditorium on the campus of TCU and will be open to the public. Competitors will be responsible for their own travel and housing arrangements. Practice facilities and instruments will be available for all competitors during the week of the competition. Several social events, as well as opportunities to perform chamber music and participate in symposia and master classes, will be organized during the course of the competition to allow for participants to meet and play for one another on an informal basis.

The Van Cliburn Foundation is principally known for the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, held every four years in Fort Worth Texas since 1962. The Fourteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition will be held from May 24-June 9, 2013.
