FORT WORTH, TEXAS, December 15, 2009--Violinist Michael Shih, who holds the Mr. and Mrs. Sid R. Bass Chair as concertmaster of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, will make his Cliburn at the Bass debut on Tuesday, January 12, 2010.
Michael Shih was a United States Presidential Scholar in the Arts, as well as a winner of the Naumburg International Violin Competition and Artists International's Auditions--a prize that earned him a New York recital debut at Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall in 1992.
As an orchestral soloist, he has appeared with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, the Little Orchestra Society at Avery Fisher Hall, the Williamsburg Symphonia, the New York Youth Symphony, the San Pedro Sula Symphony in Honduras, and with the symphony orchestras of Dallas, Fort Worth, Hartford, and New Amsterdam. A native of Taiwan, he has performed with the Taipei Symphony at Taiwan's National Concert Hall and at the prestigious Chiehshou Concert Hall at the Office of the President of Taiwan. Festival appearances have included Aspen, Bard, Chautauqua, La Jolla, Lincoln Center, Mostly Mozart, Ravinia, and Spoleto USA.
A passionate chamber musician, from 1992 to 2002 Michael Shih was first violinist of the Whitman Quartet, formerly graduate quartet-in-residence at the Juilliard School, as well as winner of the Naumburg Chamber Music and Catherine Filene Shouse Debut Artists awards. He is currently the associate artistic director of the Chamber Music Society of Fort Worth, and has also appeared with Chamber Music Northwest, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Chamber Music International in Dallas, and on the Cliburn at the Modern series.
Media credits include NPR's Performance Today, NBC's Today Show, and Japan's NHK Television. Additionally, the esteemed violinist can be heard on numerous recordings with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, conducted by music director Miguel Harth-Bedoya.
Mr. Shih plays a 1710 Antonio Stradivari violin, generously on loan to the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra Association from Mr. and Mrs. William S. Davis of Fort Worth.
